Alabama’s Jalen Milroe rolls into heavy Heisman favorite status

Jalen Milroe Emerges as Heisman Trophy Favorite After Alabama’s Victory Over Georgia

When Jalen Milroe announced his return to Alabama for the 2024 season, he didn’t explicitly state the Heisman Trophy as one of his goals. But after his standout performance in Saturday’s thrilling 41-34 win over archrival Georgia, Milroe has firmly inserted himself into the Heisman conversation.

Milroe, who had the fifth-shortest Heisman odds at +1500 during the summer at DraftKings, has seen his stock soar. Last week, he was sitting at +700, trailing behind players like Oregon’s Dillon Gabriel, Texas’ Quinn Ewers, and Miami’s Cam Ward, all of whom cycled through the top spot.

However, after accounting for four touchdowns against Georgia, Milroe is now the clear favorite for the coveted award. His odds have shortened significantly to +250, the lowest of any player so far this season. Following behind him are Ward at +500 and Colorado’s dynamic two-way player, Travis Hunter, who saw his odds skyrocket from +2000 to +700 in just one week.

Milroe’s Standout Season

Milroe has thrown for 964 yards and 10 touchdowns this season, with only one interception to his name. He’s also added two rushing touchdowns in each of Alabama’s first four games, contributing 273 rushing yards so far. His dual-threat capabilities have made him a nightmare for opposing defenses, and his leadership in crucial games, especially against Georgia, has only solidified his candidacy for the Heisman.

Rising Contenders

Travis Hunter has made a name for himself as the highest-ranked non-quarterback in the Heisman race. His meteoric rise comes as a result of injuries to key players like Quinn Ewers and the early-season upsets that have shaken up the landscape. Ole Miss’ Jaxson Dart, once among the frontrunners, saw his odds fall sharply to +1600 after the Rebels’ disappointing loss to Kentucky.

Also climbing up the ranks is Ashton Jeanty, Boise State’s standout running back. Jeanty vaulted into the Heisman conversation after a monster performance against Washington State, where he rushed for 259 yards and four touchdowns. He now has 845 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns through just four games.

Falling Favorites

On the flip side, Carson Beck, Georgia’s quarterback, took a significant hit to his Heisman chances after throwing three interceptions in the loss to Alabama. His final pick, a costly underthrow that sealed Georgia’s defeat, was a major blow. Beck, who had seen his odds rise to +800 during the summer, now finds himself a distant +3000 longshot.

Meanwhile, Quinn Ewers has seen his Heisman odds drift to +2000 after missing Texas’ last two games due to injury, which has sidelined his early momentum.
